The general rules and exceptional rules of articles:

In English grammar, there are altogether three articles: a, an, and the. Articles are generally used before nouns or noun equivalents and they are a type of adjective. The definite article is 'The' and this definite article is used before a noun indicating the identity of the noun is already known to the reader. The indefinite articles are  a and an and indefinite articles are used before a noun in general or when the identity is not known to the reader. There are situation where a noun takes no article.

As a rule, the following definitions of articles and table comprising of articles  summarize the basic usages of articles. It is recommended that you continue reading for a more detailed description of the rules and examples of how and when articles are applied to a sentence.

In order to understand how articles are used, it is important to know the fact that nouns are divided into two categories, it can be either countable (which can be counted) or non-countable. It refers to quantity and cannot be counted. Moreover, countable nouns are either in the singular form which is one ine number or plural form  which is more than one ine number. Noncountable nouns are always used in singular form.

As for example, if we are talking about water ok any liquids that that is poured into a glass, there are thousands of drops but they cannot be counted that's why what ahir is uncountable noun. But if the water is spilled on table, there can be one drop which is singular or two or more drops which are plural of water on the table. The word drop in this example is a countable noun because we can easily count the number of drops. Therefore, according to the rules applying to countable nouns, the word drop would use the articles a or the.

If the noun starts with vowel sound or the initial letter of the world followed by article is vowel or a,e,I,o,u,- article an will be used here. But, if the initial letter is consonant other than vowel, the article a will be used here. This is general rule. There are a lot of exceptions which needs to be understood.

Let's come about definite article 'the'. The article the is used before that kind of noun which is already known to The reader. It is the general rule. There are a lot more nouns which take 'the' as a rule in any situation. You need to have a good idea of those kinds of nouns which are followed by article the.
