What is punctuation marks? Where is used punctuation marks?


What is punctuation marks

Punctuation marks is the system of symbols that people use in order to separate sentences and parts of sentences. The other use of punctuation marks is to make their meaning clear.

Sentence Endings Punctuation Marks

There are three punctuation marks out of 14 marks that we use to indicate the ending of a sentence. They are the period, question mark, and exclamation point.

The period (.) is one of the punctuation marks which is placed at the end of a sentence which is declarative or assertive or statements.

When period is used as a sentence enter the example is: Rohim and korim went to market.

The punctuation mark of question is used to indicate a direct question and this punctuation mark is used at the end of a sentence.

When did Rahim leave for the market?

To express a sudden outcry, we use exclamation point or exclamation mark (!)


Within dialogue: "you rascal!" screamed karim.

Comma, Semicolon, and Colon

We use comma (,) to show a separation of ideas or to show different elements within the structure of a sentence which is consisting of  lists.

To separate two complete sentences we use comma: We went to the movies, and then we went out to lunch.

We use, to separate list for elements: Karim wanted the black, green, and blue dress.

The use of semicolon as punctuation marks

We use semicolon (;) in order to connect independent clauses and to show a closer relationship between the clauses.


Rahim was hurt; he knew Sabiha only said it to upset him.

The use of colon as punctuation marks

There are three main uses for a colon (:). The first one is used after a word introducing a quotation and explanation, example or series.

Rahim was planning to study four subjects: politics, philosophy, sociology, and economics.

The second uses of colon is between independent clauses- the second explains the first, similar to a semicolon:


Karim didn't have time to get changed: Karim was already late.

Colon is used for the third use  is for emphasis:


There was one thing Shila loved more than any other: her dog.


Use of Dash and the Hyphen as punctuation marks

Dash and Hyphen are the two other common punctuation marks that we use in our written English language.

We use dash in order to separate words into statement.
