Introduction : Bangladesh is a riverine country. In addition to the large number of big and small rivers, there are many haors, beels and canals which constitute an extensive network of aquatic.

Communication: So steamers, launches and boats constantly ply up and down on the water. These water-bodies render a great service to the people. Boats are very popular for domestic transport. A journey by boat is relatively cheap and convenient. It is comfortable and interesting too. The other day I had an opportunity to enjoy a journey by boat. It was a journey from Raita to Selaidah in the district of Kushtia.

Occasion and starting: I had to take my mother from our house to my sister's house. A boat was hired. There were a helmsman and two rowers in the boat. The boat had an awning. We left Raita at about nine in the morning. It was late September. The flood waters had gone down. The day was sunny. Mother remained under the awning, but I sat on the top of the bow.

On the Padma river: The boat left the 'ghat' of our house and we entered the river Padma. There were many were going down the stream. We passed under the famous large and small boats plying up and down. We passed under the famous Hardinge Bridge at Paksey. The bridge looked grand. I marvelled at the engineering skill of those who had constructed the bridge. We saw two ferry-steamers carrying passengers and trucks to and from Paksey and Bheramara ghats.

The sights: The boats plying with hoisted sails of different colours were a sight worth seeing. We saw fishermen with nets in their boats, catching hilsa fish. We were not very far from the bank. Men were working in their fields, women came to bathe and fetch water; children were tending their cattle, some birds flew over our head; a few kingfishers dived into the water to catch fish, but none was successful.

On the Gorai: At noon we entered the Gorai, a branch of the Padma. We ate some sweets and cakes that we had carried from home. We drank river water. The Gorai is not much wide. We could see everything clearly on both sides. Some men were fishing. As we approached Kushtia town, we found more and more people bathing in the river. At about two in the afternoon, we reached Selaidah ghat.

Conclusion: It was a pleasant journey. Mother and I enjoyed the journey very much. We paid off the boatmen. We also gave them tips and thanks. Then we began to walk. We had to walk about one kilometre. The walk was delightful, too. As I looked back, I saw the boatmen getting ready to cook their meal.

নৌকা ভ্রমণ।

ভূমিকা : বাংলাদেশ একটি নদীমাতৃক দেশ। ছোটো বড়ো অনেক নদী ছাড়াও এখানে অনেক হাওড়, বিল ও খাল রয়েছে যা জলপথে যোগাযোগের একটি বিস্তৃত নেটওয়ার্ক। তাই স্টিমার, লঞ্চ এবং নৌকাগুলো জলপথে সবসময় চলাচল করে। এই জলাশয়গুলো জনগণকে ব্যাপক সেই সেবা প্রদান করে। অভ্যন্তরীণ পরিবহন হিসাবে নৌকা খুব জনপ্রিয়। নৌকাযোগে ভ্রমণ অপেক্ষাকৃত সস্তা এবং সুবিধাজনক। এটি আরামদায়ক এবং আনন্দদায়কও বটে। এমনি একদিন আমার নৌকায় ভ্রমণ উপভোগ করার সুযোগ হয়েছিল। যাত্রাটি ছিল কুষ্টিয়া জেলার রায়টা থেকে শিলাইদহ পর্যন্ত।

উপলক্ষ্য এবং শুরু : আমার মাকে আমার বোনের বাড়িতে আমাকে নিয়ে যেতে একটি নৌকা ভাড়া করা হয়েছিল। নৌকায় একজন কাণ্ডারি/মাঝি ও লোক ছিল। নৌকায় একটি শামিয়ানা ছিল। সকাল ৯ টার দিকে আমরা রায়টা ছেড়ে গেলাম। এটা ছিল সেপ্টেম্বরের শেষভাগ। বন্যার পানি নেমে গিয়েছিল। দিনটি ছিল রৌদ্রোজ্জ্বল। মা শামিয়ানার নিচে ছিল কিন্তু আমি সামনের গলুই-এর উপরে বসেছিলাম।

পদ্মা নদীতে : নৌকাটি আমাদের বাড়ির ঘাট ছেড়ে গেল এবং আমরা পদ্মা নদীতে প্রবেশ করলাম। সেখানে অনেক বড়ো ও ছোটো নৌকা চলাচল করছিল । আমরা জলস্রোত ধরে যাচ্ছিলাম পাকশীর বিখ্যাত হার্ডিঞ্জ সেতুর নিচ দিয়ে আমরা গিয়েছিলাম। সেতুটিকে চমৎকার দেখাচ্ছিল। যারা সেতু নির্মাণ করেছিল তাদের প্রকৌশল দক্ষতায় আমি অত্যন্ত বিস্মিত হয়েছিলাম। আমরা দুটি ফেরি-স্টিমার দেখেছিলাম যেগুলো পাকশী হতে ভেড়ামারা এবং ভেড়ামারা হতে পাকশী ঘাটগুলোতে যাত্রীদের ও ট্রাকগুলোকে আনা-নেওয়া করছিল ।

দৃশ্যসমূহ : বিভিন্ন রঙের পাল তুলে চলা নৌকাগুলো ছিল সত্যিই দেখার মতো দৃশ্য। আমরা মাছ ধরার নৌকাগুলোতে জেলেদেরকে জাল দিয়ে ইলিশ মাছ ধরতে দেখেছিলাম। আমরা তীর হতে খুব বেশি দূরে ছিলাম না। পুরুষেরা তাদের মাঠে কাজ করছিল, নারীরা গোসল করতে ও পানি নেওয়ার জন্য এসেছিল; শিশুরা তাদের গবাদিপশুর চারণ করছিল, কিছু পাখি আমাদের মাথার উপর দিয়ে উড়ে গিয়েছিল; কিছু মাছরাঙা পাখি মাছ ধরতে জলের মধ্যে ডুব দিয়েছিল কিন্তু কেউ সফল হয়নি।

গড়াই নদীতে : দুপুরের দিকে আমরা পদ্মার একটি শাখা গড়াই নদীতে প্রবেশ করলাম। আমরা কিছু মিষ্টি এবং কেক খেলাম যা আমরা বাড়ি হতে নিয়ে গিয়েছিলাম। আমরা নদীর পানি পান করেছিলাম। গড়াই নদী 'খুব বেশি প্রশস্ত নয়। আমরা নদীর উভয় পাশের সবকিছু পরিষ্কারভাবে দেখতে পেয়েছিলাম। কিছু মানুষ মাছ ধরছিল । যতই আমরা কুষ্টিয়া শহরের দিকে অগ্রসর হচ্ছিলাম ততই আরও বেশি লোককে নদীতে স্নান করতে দেখলাম। বিকেল দুটার দিকে আমরা শিলাইদহ ঘাটে পৌঁছলাম।

উপসংহার : এটি একটি আনন্দময় ভ্রমণ ছিল। মা এবং আমি ভ্রমণটি অনেক উপভোগ করেছিলাম। আমরা নৌকাচালকদের পারিশ্রমিক পরিশোধ করলাম। আমরা তাদেরকে বকশিশ ও ধন্যবাদও দিলাম। তারপর আমরা হাঁটা শুরু করলাম। আমাদের প্রায় এক কিলোমিটার হাঁটতে হয়েছিল। হাঁটাটাও আনন্দদায়ক হয়েছিল। যখন আমি পিছন ফিরে তাকালাম, আমি নৌকাচালকদেরকে তাদের খাবার রান্না করার প্রস্তুতি নিতে দেখলাম।
