Scaling a Mountain Peak 

Nishat Mazumder, a Bangladeshi woman in her early forties, is a sports icon. She comes of a modest background; her father is a businessman and her mother is a housewife. She is the second of four siblings. Nishat has three things that she can be proud of. These are: she has extraordinarily supportive parents who accepted her dreams as real; her father was a freedom fighter the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971, and she scaled the highest peak in world as the first Bangladeshi girl in 2012. Nishat's life presents an inspirational story that the youth in Bangladesh needs to know. 

 Nishat was born on 5 January 1981 in a village called Teori, which is situated in Ramganj upazila in Lakshmipur District. She completed her schooling from Bottomley Home Girls’ High School in 1997, and passed HSC from Shahid Anwar Girls' College in 1999. She earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in Accounting from Dhaka City College, and currently works for Dhaka WASA as an accountant. She is also interested in different languages and cultures of the world, and has enrolled for her MA in Japan Studies at Dhaka University. For us, Nishat’s life comes across as especially significant because it tells us how the influence of one person can motivate someone to dream big. As the daughter of a freedom fighter, Nishat had to face many obstacles in her life, but her mother, her role model, gave her courage and determination to overcome them and pursue her dreams, Ashura Mazumder, Nishat's mother, is a hardworking and understanding woman, who has been a pillar of support for her family in the direst of situations. Nishat learned from her mother, how to keep mental strength in calamitous moments of life. Learning from her, Nishat began her dream of conquering mountains.

Most probably you have heard of Superman, and the Hollywood film showing as adventures. Christopher Reeve, the actor who played the role of Superman in the film said in a speech he gave at the Democratic National Convention in 1996 — “So many of our dreams at first seem impossible, then they seem improbable, and then, when we summon the will, they soon become inevitable.” This has happened in Nishat’s life too. Though she had a long cherished dream to be a mountaineer, it was not until 2003 that she could climb the 967 feet high Keokradong. The climbing event was organized on 29 May, 2003 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay’s conquest of Mount Everest. Nishat had walked the streets of Dhaka with a 15 kg backpack for three consecutive days to make her body ready for the climb before the real expedition. Factors like chance, dedication and creating Opportunities are important for anyone’s success, but a sportsperson should also have discipline and perseverance to succeed. Institutional and professional trainings are also necessary. Nishat joined Bangladesh Mountaineering and Trekking Club (BMTC) in 2006, and completed a basic training course at Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Darjeeling, India in 2007. 

After that she scaled peaks in the Himalayan range one after another, joining several teams from Bangladesh. Today we have a mountain peak in the Himalayas, the Nepal-Bangladesh Friendship Peak, so named because mountaineers from the two friendly countries jointly climbed it for the first time. Nishat’s team was led by M.A. Mohit, who has been on top of Everest and quite a few other peaks higher than 8000 meters. 

In Bangladesh, mountaineering Is a new sport activity, and we are yet to develop a culture that will encourage a woman’s mountaineering activities. Nishat took the challenge, and she was supported by her parents. This is an expensive sport, and Nishat and other mountaineers could not have succeeded if several organizations had not helped them. Nishat was an ambassador of “Because I am a Girl” campaign of Plan International’s Bangladesh chapter in her expedition to Mount Everest in 2012. She wanted to leave a message for all people of Bangladesh that a girl can do anything a boy can do, and hence every girl should have support from her parents and society in every challenging activity.

Answer. The person is Nishat's mother, She helped Nishat by giving her courage and determination to overcome many obstacles in her life and pursue her dreams.

Answer. The life of Nishat Mazumder presents an inspirational story to the youth in Bangladesh.  

(4) What is the importance of Ashura Mazumder in shaping her daughter's life?

Answer. The importance of Ashura Mazumder, Nishat's mother, is really great in shaping her daughter's life. Nishat learned from her how to keep mental strength in tragic moments of life. This helped Nishat to fulfil her dream of conquering mountains.

Answer. Nishat Mazumder is not very tall or well built. She does not have a charming princess look. She seems to be an ordinary girl.

Answer. The life of Nishat Mazumder is of special significance for us because It tells us how the influence of one person can motivate someone to cherish big dreams.

(11) How did Nishat make her body ready for the climb before the real expedition May, 2003?

Answer. Before the real expedition on 29 May, 2003, Nishat made her body ready for the climb by walking in the streets of Dhaka with a 15 kg backpack for three consecutive days.  

(12) Who was Christopher Reeve? What was the occasion of his speech mentioned here? 

Answer. Christopher Reeve was the actor who played the role of Superman in the Hollywood film, "Superman". The occasion of his speech was the Democratic National Convention in 1996.

Answer. The event of climbing 967 feet high Keokradong was organized to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay's conquest of Mount Everest. It took place on 29 May, 2003.

Answer. The factors that are important for the success of a sportsperson are chance, dedication, creating opportunities, discipline, perseverance and institutional and professional trainings.

Answer. The challenges for a girl of Bangladesh in engaging herself in mountaineering are: (i) we are yet to develop a culture to encourage a girl in mountaineering activities being a new sport activity and (ii) it is an expensive sport.

Answer. The name of the Nepal-Bangladesh Friendship Peak came into being because mountaineers from the two friendly countries jointly climbed it for the first time.

সবে চল্লিশ বছর পেরোনো নিশাত মজুমদার একজন বাংলাদেশী মহিলা যিনি একজন ক্রীড়া পথিকৃৎ। তাঁর জন্য মধ্যবিত্ত পরিবারে;তাঁর বাবা একজন ব্যবসায়ী এবং মা একজন গৃহিণী । চার ভাইবোনের মধ্যে তিনি দ্বিতীয়। নিশাতের তিনটি জিনিস রয়েছে যাতে তিনি গর্বিত হতে পারেন । এগুলি হল: তাঁর অসাধারণ সহায়ক পিতামাতা রয়েছে যারা তাঁর স্বপ্নকে বাস্তব হিসাবে গ্রহণ করেছে; তাঁর বাবা ১৯৭১ সালে বাংলাদেশের মুক্তিযুদ্ধে অংশগ্রহণ করেছিলেন এবং তিনি ২০১২ সালে প্রথম বাংলাদেশী মেয়ে হিসেবে বিশ্বের সর্বোচ্চ চূড়ায় আরোহণ করেছিলেন। নিশাতের জীবন একটি অনুপ্রেরণামূলক গল্প উপস্থাপন করে যা বাংলাদেশের যুবকদের জানা দরকার। 

নিশাত ১৯৮১ সালের ৫ জানুয়ারি লক্ষ্মীপুর জেলার রামগঞ্জ উপজেলার তেওরী গ্রামে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। তিনি ১৯৯৭ সালে বটমূলে হোম গার্লস হাই স্কুল থেকে তার স্কুল জীবন শেষ করেন এবং ১৯৯৯ সালে শহীদ আনোয়ার গার্লস কলেজ থেকে এইচএসসি পাস করেন। তিনি ঢাকা সিটি কলেজ থেকে হিসাববিজ্ঞানে স্নাতক এবং স্নাতকোত্তর ডিগ্রি অর্জন করেন । বর্তমানে তিনি ঢাকা ওয়াসার একজন হিসাবরক্ষক হিসাবে কাজ করছেন। তিনি বিশ্বের বিভিন্ন ভাষা ও সংস্কৃতিতেও আগ্রহী এবং ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে জাপান স্টাডিজে এমএ করার জন্য ভর্তি হয়েছেন । আমাদের জন্য নিশাতের জীবন বিশেষভাবে তাৎপর্যপূর্ণ কারণ এটি আমাদের বুঝিয়ে দেয় যে কীভাবে একজন ব্যক্তির প্রভাব কাউকে বড় স্বপ্ন দেখতে অনুপ্রাণিত করতে পারে। একজন মুক্তিযোদ্ধার কন্যা হিসেবে নিশাতকে তাঁর জীবনে অনেক বাধার সম্মুখীন হতে হয়েছিল। কিন্তু তাঁর আদর্শ তাঁর মা সেই বাধাগুলিকে অতিক্রম করতে এবং তাঁর স্বপ্নকে অনুসরণ করার জন্য তাঁকে সাহস এবং দৃঢ় সংকল্প দিয়েছিলেন। নিশাতের মা আশুরা মজুমদার একজন কঠোর পরিশ্রমী এবং বোধশক্তিসপন্ন মহিলা, যিনি কঠিন পরিস্থিতিতে তাঁর পরিবারের হাল ধরেছিলেন। নিশাত তাঁর মায়ের কাছ থেকে শিখেছেন কীভাবে জীবনের দুর্যোগের মুহূর্তে মানসিক শক্তি ধরে রাখতে হয়। তাঁর কাছ থেকে শিখে নিশাত তাঁর পর্বত জয়ের স্বপ্ন দেখা শুরু করেন।

খুব সম্ভবত তোমরা সুপারম্যান আর তার অ্যাডভেঞ্চার কাহিনি নিয়ে হলিউড চলচ্চিত্রের কথা শুনেছ। এই ছবিতে সুপার ম্যানের ভূমিকায় অভিনয় করা অভিনেতা ক্রিস্টোফার রিড ১৯৯৬ সালে ডেমোক্রেটিক ন্যাশনাল কনভেনশনে দেওয়া এক বক্তৃতায় বলেছিলেন - “আমাদের অনেক স্বপ্ন প্রথমে একেবারেই অসম্ভব বলে মনে হয়, তারপরে সেগুলি কিছুটা অসম্ভব বলে মনেহয় এবং তারপরে যখন আমরা আমাদের ইচ্ছাশক্তি কে কাজে লাগাই সেগুলি শীঘ্রই অনিবার্য হয়ে ওঠে।” নিশাতের জীবনেও এমন হয়েছে। যদিও তার দীর্ঘকালের লালিত স্বপ্ন ছিল একজন পর্বতারোহী হওয়ার, কিন্তু ২০০৩ সাল পর্যন্ত তিনি ৯৬৭ ফুট উঁচু কেওক্রাডং আরোহণ করতে পারেননি। এডমন্ড হিলারি এবং তেনজিং নোরগে-এর মাউন্ট এভারেস্ট জয়ের ৫০তম বার্ষিকী উদযাপনের জন্য ২৯ মে, ২০০৩-এ পর্বতারোহণের অনুষ্ঠানের আয়োজন করা হয়েছিল। সত্যিকারের অভিযানের আগে তাঁর শরীরকে আরোহণের জন্য প্রস্তুত করতে টানা তিন দিন ১৫ কেজি ব্যাকপ্যাক নিয়ে ঢাকার রাস্তায় হেঁটেছিলেন নিশাত । সৌভাগ্য, ঐকান্তিকতা এবং সুযোগ তৈরির মতো বিষয়গুলি যে কোনও ব্যক্তির সাফল্যের জন্য গুরুত্বপূর্ণ, তবে একজন ক্রীড়াবিদকে সফল হওয়ার জন্য শৃঙ্খলা এবং অধ্যবসায়ও থাকতে হবে ।প্রাতিষ্ঠানিক এবং পেশাদার প্রশিক্ষণও প্রয়োজন । নিশাত ২০০৬ সালে বাংলাদেশ মাউন্টেনিয়ারিং অ্যান্ড ট্রেকিং ক্লাবে (বিএমটিসি) যোগদান করেন এবং ২০০৭ সালে ভারতের দার্জিলিং এর হিমালয়ান মাউন্টেনিয়ারিং ইনস্টিটিউটে একটি প্রাথমিক প্রশিক্ষণ কোর্স সম্পন্ন করেন। এর পর তিনি বাংলাদেশের একাধিক দলে যোগদান করে হিমালয় পর্বতমালার একের পর এক চূড়া অতিক্রম করেন ।

আজ হিমালয়ে নেপাল-বাংলাদেশ ফ্রেন্ডশিপ নামে একটি পর্বত শৃঙ্গ আছে। এর এরকম নামকরণ করা হয়েছে কারণ দুটি বন্ধুত্বপূর্ণ দেশের পর্বতারোহীরা যৌথভাবে প্রথমবারের মতো এটিতে আরোহণ করেছিল। নিশাতের দলের নেতৃত্বে ছিলেন এম. এ. মোহিত,যিনি এভারেস্টের চূড়া এবং ৮০০০ মিটারেরও বেশি উচ্চতার আরও কয়েকটি শৃঙ্গে আরোহণ করেছিলেন।বাংলাদেশে পর্বতারোহণ একটি নতুন ক্রীড়া এবং আমরা এখনও এমন একটি সংস্কৃতি গড়ে তুলতে পারিনি যা একজন মহিলার পর্বতারোহণ কার্যক্রমকে উৎসাহিত করবে। নিশাত চ্যালেঞ্জটি গ্রহণ করেছিল এবং তাঁকে তাঁর বাবা-মা সমর্থন করেছিল। এটি একটি ব্যয়বহুল ক্রীড়া এবং নিশাত ও অন্যান্য পর্বতারোহীরা সফল হতে পারত না যদি বিভিন্ন সংস্থা তাদের সাহায্য না করত । নিশাত ২০১২ সালে মাউন্ট এভারেস্ট অভিযানে প্ল্যান ইন্টারন্যাশনালের বাংলাদেশ চ্যাপ্টারের “কারণ আমি একজন মেয়ে” প্রচারাভিযানের একজন শুভেচ্ছাদূত ছিলেন। তিনি বাংলাদেশের সকল মানুষের জন্য একটি বার্তা দিতে চেয়েছিলেন যে একটি ছেলে যা করতে পারে তা একটি মেয়েও করতে পারে এবং তাই প্রতিটি মেয়ের তার বাবা-মা এবং সমাজের কাছ থেকে প্রতিটি চ্যালেঞ্জিং কর্মকাণ্ডে সমর্থন পাওয়া উচিত।
