HSC English 2nd Week Assignment Answer

Choosing a Short Story:

I read an interesting Short Story written by William Somerset Maugham named “The Luncheon”.

Summary of the Story:

The story is about a lady admirer of the writer. He was a young writer who received a letter from a lady who highly praised his writing. He instantly replied thanking her. In the next letter, she invited him to have a lunch at a very costly restaurant. Being young and being flattered, he could not say no. So he became a prey to the voracious lady. He had only 80 francs. He thought that he could manage the lunch easily. Though she assured him that she didn't eat anything at lunch but one after another she continued eating very costly foods that only senators used to eat at that restaurant. She enjoyed champagne, asparagus, coffee and finally the salmon and more. The writer fell in deep thought whether he could pay the bill. He himself ate nothing but only a chop. At last he got out the restaurant with an empty pocket. She ultimately was revenged by the immortal gods.

What I liked and what I did not like:

I like the way the writer narrates the story. I enjoy how the lady managed to flatter the young writer . The lady is nicely depicted as a cunning, voracious and greedy woman . I like the funny way of presentation of the story with lots of humor in the story. This story presents a good lesson for young people to be aware of flattery.

There are a number of climaxes in the story which I do not like. It might be more possible to use less climax but more humour.

My Changes In The Story:

If I am asked to change the story then I would first of all decrease the number of climaxes. I would also make the lady feel what wrong she had done to the writer in the long run. I would not introduce immortal gods to take revenge, but I would let her realize and repent.

Concluding Statement:

Overall, I find no demerits in the story, it is well written and very funny. I enjoyed the story from first to last. Never will I forget the story.
